RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) is here to stay. For many manufacturers and distributors it is a "demand pull" technology as large purchasers of their products such as Wal-Mart as well as the Department of Defense are requiring them to put RFID labels on all cartons, and in some cases, on the products within the cartons. In addition to Wal-Mart other retailers are in various stages of adopting this technology and it is only a matter of time before RFID labels will replace standard bar code labels on most shipping cartons.
What's wrong with bar codes? Nothing, however RFID tags offer several significant advantages:
Bar Codes Line-of-site required Proximity read only Slow read (usually manual) Single read Limited data (EAN/UPC) Read Only |
RFID No line-of-site Read up to 12 feet Fast read (100's of items/sec) Multi-tag simultaneous read 100 plus characters Read/Write |
Our goal is to make this transition as painless as possible. If you need a small number of RFID tags we can produce them for you in our service bureau. If you anticipate a regular need for a large volume of tags, it probably makes sense to purchase an RFID printer and labels and code them yourself. The remainder of this section will provide information on RFID basics and the available options.
